Oxygen Masks

Post by lqcorsa » Wed Jul 19, 2006 5:18 am

I'm know this is probably a popular question, but I'm still curious. Why do the thunderbirds wear oxygen masks? I know the Blue Angels don't need them because they can handle the g's and they don't get high enough for low pressure to kick in, but the Thunderbirds do wear them... Why is this?

F-16's have an Emergency Power Unit which uses Hydrazine (very toxic). Emergency Procedures have the pilot switch to 100% oxygen if there is an EPU activation. I’m sure that’s the biggest factor.
