VRA Looking for a PR Manager

Post by Ells » Wed Oct 03, 2007 10:23 am

Hey Guys,
It's now come to the time when the Virtual Red Arrows needs a PR Manager as more of my time is dedicated to developing the team and back office side of things.

What the role involves:
Keep an eye on activities on multiple forums and feedback to the team.
Post press releases on multiple forums and feedback to the team any relevant comments.
Run our recruitment campaigns.
Joint liaison regarding VFAT and other display opportunities.
Liaise with outside parties on PR matters.
General PR matters for the team.

You do not have to have experience in PR as training will be given, but must be competent in using multiple forum types and able to communicate in a professional manner. English language must be used in all communications but you do not need to be English.

This is a voluntary position, I.e. no monies will be paid, however you will become a member of the Active VRA Team and have the opportunity to fly with us.

For more information on the Virtual Red Arrows, please visit our website and forums at http://www.virtualredarrows.com

If you are interested in this position, please either PM me on these forums, post a message in our recruitment section forums or email me on ells@virtualredarrows.com

No offense Ells but posting this stuff on a public forum seen daily was a stupid move. If I were you, cancel this administration recruitment and look at your own team for anybody who wants to manage the team while your out. My reasons are....

#1- Hire somebody who you and your team gets along with and knows well.
#2- You don't know much about the people who want to be incharge of a team already still in the making.
#3- Make sure the person who will be managing the team will be trustful with his "admin" rights.

I can see what you are trying to do in all ways to benefit your team and help out the management of it, as well as a little recruitment on the side but I still stick by my opinion in recruiting a newbie to hop right into the managment office. "You need to learn to crawl before you learn to walk"

No offense Viper, but i'm 34 years old and have been in Marketing for 17 years of my life so know what to do thanks.

And here are my reasons:

#1 The team needs to be dedicated on flying, not administration roles
#2 They will be well vetted before we accept them and will not be managing the team whilst i'm out, they will be dealing with PR only.
#3 No one is in charge of our team except the Boss
#4 They will not have 'admin' rights, they will become part of our Active Team so they can see what is going on to be able to do their job.
#5 PR means Public Relations, it does not mean manage the team

However, thanks for your concern and comments, I always welcome feedback from other teams.
Look forward to chasing your ass in VFAT

No offense Viper, but I don't think you should be giving anyone advice with respect to "stupid moves". Not to mention the fact that the term "stupid move" is inherently offensive.

I am sure Ells and the rest of the VRA are big boys and can make decisions regarding their own hiring process. Furthermore I would imagine that this info was put out to the team before looking for a candidate from the outside. It isn't as if posting it in these forums is posting it to the "world". We have a pretty tight knit community that is interested in formation flying/flight simming so I think this would be an appropriate place to look for someone to fill the aforementioned position.

I am also sure that the VRA is perfectly capable of vetting their candidates to make sure they are a good personality fit for their team as well as a trustworthy individual that they can trust with admin rights. I don't think their intent is just to hand over the keys to the kingdom to anyone who replies to the post. It certainly doesn't sound to me like they are looking for someone to be "incharge" of their team, just someone to facilitate the many Public Relations duties that face an organization of this type, especially with VFAT around the corner. It's a hard role to fulfill with real life, flying duties, etc. etc.

Out of curiousity, what exactly does it mean that their team is "already still in the making"? Are they "already in the making" or "still in the making"?

I digress. My point is, I am sure VRA is perfectly capable of deciding the "who, what, when, where and how" of their recruiting process. Just because it isn't the way you would proceed certainly doesn't make this a "stupid move".

@ Ells:

Good luck finding a suitable candidate to fill the role. It's not easy to find someone with the right mix of character traits for a job that involves attention to detail, people skills, administrative skills, communication skills, creative skills, etc.

Hey Thumper,
Many thanks for your reply and indeed it is a full time job handling the PR, especially with outside activities in which we are involved in at present. And is equally a very hard job finding the right candidate, however as you said, we are in a tight knit community and this is the right place to search.

Again, many thanks to the Virtual Thunderbirds for their wisdom, guidance and kick ass formation flying.

To Viper, Our team is now run like a business, because to be able to succeed in what we do, we have to run like a business. What I mean by that is a very stringent recruiting process for all team members from pilots to admin staff, working with sponsors, working with certain game development companies, working with other companies for external events, etc. I am honoured to be able to fulfill that management role for the VRA to guide the team to achieve our goals.

Ellse, sounds like you know what your doing and don't forget that this started as a hobby, and even after a long day in the buiz corner or PA's office (those PA peeps sure drive you nuts don't they ) - It should still be mostly a hobby (unless you plan on quitting your day job)! My advice: Take what you do seriously, but remember to not take yourself too seriously... At the end of the day, it is still in fact a virtual reality whichever way it comes around... :)

Btw, I don't think it was a bad move to throw out some bait for a PR position. You definitely targetted the right area(s) assuming you posted elsewhere in the community too. You and the team can still choose whomever you'd like, but the candidate field might grow a bit larger this way and that would be the whole idea.

Thanks for the remarks about our team! We always set the bar very high for ourselves and strive for perfection, and at the same time we always try to remember to remain grounded and show humility. Everyone's been a rookie sometime!

Thanks for your post LD, and indeed we can't take life even, too seriously lol

I've posted on quite a few flight sim fourms, so we'll see what the mix throws up for us.

No probs on the remarks, like I said before, watching Smoke On has inspired me to do something with my flying skills and contribute to a great team and it will be our honour to fly along yourselves and other very well respected teams at VFAT.
