Was just looking through the thunderbird support manual and found this...
3. DEMONSTRATION FEE
a. Department of Defense policy states civilian shows must pay $6,000 per official demonstration. This is a partial reimbursement for expenses. Make checks payable to “Defense Accounting Office.”
So civilian show do have to pay, just not mil. bases.

Just to clarify. Civilian show arrangers have to find a way to cover these expenses, it typically does not cost the public anything (there are few exceptions however where they do charge admission fee's). The expenses and other costs to get the air show circuit folks (not just the Thunderbirds, but including them) would typically be covered by sponsors and companies putting their name on the show (i.e. "brought to you by..." or "The (insert name of company) 2006 Air Power Festival" etc).

That's strange that you guys can't do that. Last Blue Angel show I bought a hat from them. I guess thats life though.

Did you buy a hat from them or did you buy a hat from a vendor that has "Blue Angels" written on it, with the official logo and signage? The government does low-bid contracts to clothing and other merchants to be able to sell at airshows. Same with the Thunderbirds. In fact, I have stumbled upon vendors that, at a Blue Angel show, were selling Thunderbird shirts, and vise versa.
