Hawg's Nevada Terrain

Post by Blaze » Mon Nov 10, 2008 1:32 am

In the works over at SIM-MOD is terrain for Nevada. Being a fan of the Thunderbirds both real and virtual, I am VERY excited about this! :D Now that we'll have our hometown terra-firma to fly over, maybe we can finally have our own Virtual Aviation Nation airshow, or Virtual Red Flag Exercises. ;)

Here's a promo video by Glowing Amraam for the new terrain that the SIM-MOD team is working on.

Heard this preview video was coming out, but didn't know it was already on YouTube. Thanks for posting it Buster.

The SIM-MOD team is also looking for Nellis AFB photos such as buildings, hangars, towers, light poles etc. If you want to help out, put up a post or PM "Hawg11". This terrain is planned to be included in the DCS: A-10C Warthog release.

EDIT: Nevada Promo video download in higher quality.

Well, since the Nevada terrain was released to the public recently, I may as well share some screenies I took from when Hawg graciously shared the mod with us a while back.

Expect more to come soon... :P

From an update about 3 days ago the ground facilities look to be worked on. Should be available in the next part released. :)

Here's a Crimean-Nevada map selector allowing you to choose which theater to fly in before you fly without having to install and uninstall all the time! ;)

Also available today is the standalone CDDS version of the terrain, it still works with the Map Switcher. ;)

Uninstall THE 3-PART VERSION before installing this one!

So, with the download link above you only need that one single file instead of the three part install - that's much better! I figured some good would come from releasing this WIP terrain mod to the public, and as we've seen from just the first day there's already a CDDS version that will surely boost performance a bit in addition to a theatre selector tool.

I guess the Virtual Thunderbirds will have to invite some of the other teams to the Home of the Virtual Thunderbirds for "Air Exchange Day" sometime in the near future now that we are flying at Nellis AFB and practicing at the range nearby Creech AFB. 8)

No work done on Creech AFB yet, although Hawg had mentioned earlier he might start work on it. For starters it would be nice to populate Nellis AFB with buildings and somehow import the LO Reload runway textures (or better ones) for the taxiways and runways. Right now all runways at Nellis are labeled "03L" on the numbers by each approach end and look rather cartoonish. There's also a blatant mistake at Nellis AFB: The runways (and entire Nevada map it would seem) appears to be aligned to true north instead of magnetic north. When you line up on the Nellis runways, the heading tape reads 041/221 degrees (which is the correct true heading for the KLSV runways) and not 027/207 degrees (magnetic) read in the cockpit IRL when lined up. A slight oversight for magnetic variation by the Simmod team. (Coincidentally, the mag var is 14E degrees which adds up perfectly with the runway misalignments for 3L/21R and 3R/21L)...

Since the Simmod team split up and went their separate ways, Hawg made everything available public that he had worked on except for content that originated by Simmod (buildings). According to Hawg, it appears that Lucky wants to continue with making buildings though...!

Good things will come from this! :D

@Blaze, check your PMs. :wink:

Yea actually I'm starting to replace the Nellis textures myself for the Patriots. And the buildings AFAIK I saw an update about 3 days or so ago on the ED forums of the buildings WIP so hopefully the next pack released will have them. ;)
