Comms using Ventrilo or TeamSpeak? Dealing with lag.

Post by H4rM » Tue Jun 20, 2006 2:04 pm

How do you guys deal with the lag from the time Bon Jobie makes a call for action to when you actually hear it?
I notice that TeamSpeak has about a 1 second delay, not sure with ventrilo since I haven't flown with it yet.

Just Curious, maybe Ventrilo has less lag?

There's a slight delay in input by Lead. Once practiced several hundreds of hours it becomes second nature, but initially Lead has to focus on making his calls and making the same delay between moving his hands every time. Being consistent is key and includes every aspect of leading. Even the inclination in Lead's voice helps...

Each player has slightly different lag from the next, some a lot more than others. As long as Lead is consistent and does his timing, cadence and input the exact same way every time it doesn't matter what word each player hears when the input is seen. We know what to expect!

The lag Lead is looking for is typically around half a second to a second, since most of the squad has Ventrilo and game lag around 50ms on good days and slightly higher on bad days. That way, most of the wingmen hear the word in the cadence at the correct timing with the input. Lead delays his input half a second after the cadence, by the time most wingmen hear it the input happens just as the initiating word comes through Ventrilo. But again, it's not a science... consistency and anticipation is what makes it work!
