Poor old Cairns... Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, is directly in the sights of a Category 5 cyclone. It will hit in about 12 hours.

I think the same can be said about half the US right now, while under siege from the 6th blizzard in 6 weeks. Sleet, snow, ice, freezing fog, freezing rain, ice pellets, winds howling - you name it! Another week of thousands of cancelled flights...

300 km/h winds. 2 metre storm surge in the CBD plus rollers up to 9 metres going down the main street...... Cairns may be wiped out.

My front porch is about to be wiped out. 22 inches of white stuff with the addition of +35 knot winds expected here.

It looks like Cairns dodged a bullet. The cyclone veered away and crossed the coast where it wasn't very populated. Those areas have been flattened but, amazingly, no reports of casualties yet. Our weather forecasters gave us about a week prior notice so people were obviously well prepared. Everyone is breathing a sigh of relief because it appears that only property has been damaged...

For anyone thinking that a cyclone is different than a hurricane or that I was maybe a little alarmist, I offer the following...

Cyclone Yasi superimposed over the lower 48.
