That's just a limit of the control system, isn't it? With a direct radio link rather than the satellite relay I'm guessing they use...they could have better real time control, allowing conventional control.

Or they could program the "lead" jet's flight path and tap into the research that's been going on in automated formation flight. :D

Heck, if a guy like me can make an RC helicopter keep itself airborne autonomously, then the guys with the big budgets had better be doing some amazing work. :D
