90 Years of History

Post by Blaze » Sun Dec 09, 2007 4:04 am

An F-16C Fighting Falcon from the Texas Air National Guard's 111th Fighter Squadron flies with a special paint job in honor of the squadron's 90th anniversary. All the colors and markings have specific meanings, reflecting the unit's nine-decade history.

Isn't she gorgeous?! :D

Thats a real nice pic but of an ugly paint scheme IMHO. I suppose you would need to be privy to the squadron's history to appreciate the significance of the colours but to me that scheme doesn't do justice to an F16.

Meh, I'm a warbird fan myself and I love the scheme. It does look a bit unusual on the viper though!

Familiar with that one. I saw it at Ellington Field in Houston/Galveston ths year. I am sure Tex from the VBA could tell you more about it. He works at Ellington under contract for NASA maintining their T-38 fleet.

The paint scheme is common to Army Air Corps between WW1 and WW2. Although I have seen mostly trainers painten in this scheme, I have also seen a Martin B-10 bomber wearing this paint scheme as well. Looks odd seeing it on the Viper, but it's kinda cool to see something different that pays homage to the heritage of the 111th.

To read more about the 147th Fighter Wing/111th Fighter Squadron based at Ellington, click here.

Here are some pics of aircraft from that era, wearing a very similar paint scheme:

Yea I knew that the blue and yellow were common markers for training aircraft. Man T-38's? I'm gonna have one of those someday.
