Some videos from this past weekend at MacDill with Bloke and Comrade in the F-104 and Snort in the F-86. Some cool stuff!

This ones just cool, I think as they go down the runway you can hear the pitch of the engine sound change as they are maybe going into burner?

I was wondering that too.......it almost seems to be quieter with the burner on if thats the case. I suppose I should go ask Bloke or Hak.

Generally in these high performance aircraft, you can't hear the engine(s) when in the cockpit and in flight.

Its all happening behind you.

What you are probably hearing is a change in the amount of air conditioning air coming into the cockpit from a change in throttle setting.

The throttle setting would alter the amount of air being bled off from the engine compressor to supply air to the cockpit, that is why the sound changes.

The other thing it could be is a change in the engine inlet shock cone position. There is a lot of air going into the inlet and it always needs to enter the engine at a subsonic speed. There is a movable shock cone at the front of the inlet that moves back and forward in order to achieve this. That may also be responsible for the change in the air noises.

The rear seat passenger in the F104B is just ahead of the inlet.

Well said Cobra. The sound with the packs on (A/C flow) varies even in the ERJ with throttle setting, especially during spool up and in fact, you cannot even hear the engines from the flightdeck. There have been times where the crew shutdown the engines, only to find one thrust lever slightly advanced. The FADECs won't allow shutdown unless the throttles are idle, so the engine kept on running (that's how quiet they are from up front) and also a good reason why we run checklists!

Here is the reply I got from HAK (he's a pilot for the Starfighters and an ex-F-16 demo pilot, he was not however the pilot in the video).

"I know what you are talking about, but don't exactly know how to answer because I am not sure if Rick was in burner or mil to produce that sound. Some of it is the doppler effect, some of it is the vortices still whipping around after the jet has sliced through the air and some of it could be from the nozzle adjusting / closing during the transition from AB to mil. That will actually produce a crazy sound since the computer is trying to modulate the nozzle exhaust area to produce the requested/desired thrust. I will do some more research and try to find the exact reasoning. I know in the Viper, it was mainly the burner and then the sound of the jet catching up to the actual jet as I went by."

Sounds like a good call by Cobra.

Folks,

I'm glad you liked the videos I shot, it was the first time an F-104 & F-86 have been together in formation in many decades, to not capture it on video would be almost criminal! There will be many great videos of our day to day mundanities to thrilling camera angles of high speed passes at our airshows as our new website spools up & the season progresses.

Ok, to the videos that you see on AirshowBuzz.com... which by the way is a great site, with alot of airshow performers, fans, show organizers, etc.. all posting & answering questions, if your not registered I highly suggest you do.

We were in MIL and crossing the runway threshold selected AB, the acceleration was significant from the first portion of the video to down the runway, so with the speed variation the air rushing past the jet is what I think you are hearing. Wearing a flight helmet & foamies you hardly hear the engine at all & as Cobra says it is all behind you. The difference from MIL to AB is a significant kick in the pants, the F-104 gets up & goes like you read about!

Cobra, the jet we were flying was a CF-104D, our B-Model is not in flying condition at this time.
