Need to settle an friendly argument...

Me and my buddy Zack are sitting on TeamSpeak having a little discussion here about F-14's and F/A-18's. We first started talking about how cool the F/A-18 in Fighter Ops is, then I started to talk about how it's my favorite aircraft, and then Zack said his favorite aircraft was the F-14. I personally don't really care for the F-14, and then one conversation led to the next and then I figured out we were actually started to get into a little argument.... Then we started comparing systems. He claims the F-14 can lock onto 6 targets at once (I kind of doubted him). I'm not sure if the F/A-18 can do that or not, and I'm not sure if it even has anything to do with aircraft itself. I guess my overall question is, is it possible for the 14 to lock 6 targets, and if it is does it have anything to do with the aircraft, or can the F/A-18 do that also? Looking forward to a reply (not looking forward to another argument on these message boards :) )

Yes, the F-14 could lock up 6 targets at once.

P.S. You could have googled that in 4 seconds like I did..;)

Yes Google knows all. Ask of it your questions, and answers you will get.

Just to give you some ammo in your discussion. The F-14 can lock 6 targets and fire pheonix missles from 100mi out. However this capability is designed for shooting down waves of cold war era bombers, not fighter planes. For shooting down fighter planes the F-14 and F/A-18 would both carry AMRAAMs and have essentially the same BVR capability to lock multiple targets with the radar in TWS, track while scan, mode. The F-14 would be able to fly higher and faster than the F/A-18 and therefore close distance faster, loft missles further and generally be superior in A-A combat to the F/A-18. I'm talking the F/A-18C of course, the E model with its lower radar cross section and upgraded avionics package probably has the advantage on the F-14 in BVR.
