Sony Vegas

Post by Shabo » Wed Aug 02, 2006 2:56 pm

Hey guys just got my hands on Vegas 6 for some video editing for our team and I was wondering why in Gods green earth does vegas when i render a 2 minute clip of us does it make it so darn big. The file is over 63,000KB!!!!! What do i need to do in order to make this file render smaller. I am at a total loss and was wondering if you guys who use this program had and suggestions or ideas on how to make it a smaller file? All the help would be GREATLY appreciated.

LD is really the expert when it comes to settings and compression in Vegas, but I'll try to help a little.

It all comes down to a trade-off between quality and file size. Play around with the settings when you select "Render as". Obviously, the higher the resolution and quality settings, the larger the file will be. Personally, I like the higher quality - with the average size of hard drives getting gihugeous, and faster broadband connections, so what? You can always render it at 176 x 144 and 15 fps, but I like to see the eye candy! If you check out the 4th movie on my website http://www.summerthunder.net "More July '06 Practice clips", it's only three min, 71mb. It's big, but watch it full screen - looks sweet! I figure if someone doesn't want to wait 2 min to watch it, they don't have to!

Gunner thnks for the tips bud, I see what u mean, and 100% agree with u if u dont have the 2 minutes to wait on a d.l you must not want the clip. Stayed up late last night just messing with a video i made, must tried 6 different compressions, just trying to figure out which one i should be using. I made a 5 minutes clip of our practice and it was over 73 KB's!!! o well just gonna have to hook up my new raptor HDD and see if it makes it go any faster. I dont want to sacrafice quality for a smaller size, just ruins all that hard work and eye candy.

Gotta love it how there are two threads started within the same week with the same topic, but that's beside the point. Gunner's link with Q & A's sums it up the best. I cannot and will not get into all the details, but the answers I gave Gunner should be more than enough to help anyone create exceptional quality video using Vegas. No one ever told me, I had to learn and research and find reference materials for professional video editing myself through various sources online and books (as has been the case with most of the work of the VTB, LLC - we always go the extra mile to make sure it is accurate, correct and the best we can produce), so don't expect us to spill all the beans. Having said that though, what you're doing Shabo is good. Take the tips and rest assured that if you read the suggestions, you can easily find resources to further your work. Testing is a big part of it and many factors come into play, not least with the capturing the video footage. SATA drives, multiple partitions, fast single core processor and several gigs of memory help big time. The information is out there and has always been. Just "keep on keeping on" and you'll find a good ratio of quality vs. accessibility (compromise in file size). The internet is free!
