Sunday, June 1 McGuire AFB Show

Saw the team today. Nice day for a show. Team looked good... little late getting back together after the HBB, but overall seemed pretty solid.

Interesting comm info: The Boss, during the show requested if the HBB was approved. Wind was getting pretty fast (about 20-24mph). HBB was approved, but Boss said that if it wasn't they'd "improvise"... !

Really?

Found it interesting that "improvising" was a possibility. Figured they'd go to the low show BB...

Anyone ever hear of that before?

FYI... Thanks LD for the scanner info awhile back... the Pro97 isn't available anymore, but the new Pro164 does a nice job.

I think he meant "improvise" within the constraints of what they are approved to do, possibly ending the show by keeping the Delta together after the loop etc. and reposition for the pitch.

I'm not sure, but there could be several reasons why the High BB may not have been approved (w/o the General). Weather possibly requiring a waiver, but also the team's currency. The team must perform each maneuver/show at least once every... 21 days or thereabout in order to stay current. I've heard the question being raised over the radio at previous air shows with the Boss asking if the Low BB was approved with a reference to the decision from the General/ACC (?).

Likely it was either a waiver for weather, where there could have been a reported ceiling lower than required, but with a break in the clouds at the show site etc. or a currency/re-gaining currency thing...

I'm just throwing some ideas around. You should ask them at the autograph line next time around!

I'm sure Steve will upload Sunday's show too (if he stayed for it)? Hopefully that video will have the comms. Saturday's show was cancelled due to the weather on the east coast.

Not a bad practice considering the crosswinds across the show line!

I must be getting bored watching these shows on YouTube as I always want to see exactly where the departing pilot(s) point their nose at instead of looking at where the narrator directs everyone's attention after a pass. I did learn one new thing from this video however... It would seem the direction of the rollout in any Half Cuban is always in favor of the best groundtrack depending on the wind direction (not necessarily in the same direction each show). Also, the runway configuration at McGuire made for a nice "basket swap" takeoff and quite the cool head-on view for the Delta Pitch towards the end!

About the youtube.com video, is there a special reason, that
- #6 pitched before #5
- #5 wasnt inverted during the refliction pass
- they didnt land?

Didnt they land cause of a direct flyout to another airbase?

Hmmm...was he sick ?! First time I've seen that. Guess it can happen.

#5 did pitch before #6. This year #5 is a right solo.

For whatever reason they chose not to fly the reflection. It's a practice...

They didn't land in order to continue practicing some additional maneuvers for the upcoming air show (like the narrator says).

#11 usually narrates the Friday (practice) show, since #8 typically is airborne with media rides. Here's a clip with the taxi out from the Friday, May 30 practice show we're discussing. You can see #8 taxing out last and then taking off before the demo begins. "Split" took off with Dawn Timmeney from NBC10 and went on a media flight.

But #11 narrated the SUNDAY show...

Any ideas? Or just a practice for him as well?

IDK... You'd have to look at their schedule and see if #8 departed early for another show site maybe. #8's primary duty is as the Advance Pilot.

Looks like June 7/8 in Rockford, IL is their next show.

So....Who knows ?! Always find those "little" things sort of interesting.
