Post by FALCON56 » Mon Jun 26, 2006 12:02 am

When the Thunderbrids are going into a climb.. The boss will start his ditty.."right on into four...theres four." What is that supposed to mean the "theres four".. Is it 4 Gs's or a heading of some sort?? Thanks

Hey Falcon-
4 G's...All the callouts are explained in the VTB Ops manual. You can download it from the files page.

P.S. are we going to fly this week?

Gunner is right! 4 G's...

The call is "Nose coming up 450" or the actual airspeed called out. "Right on into four". The Boss typically says (sings) it slow enough for each word to equal roughly one more G of pull and by the time he's done saying the cadence comes the call "There's four" indicating four times the force of gravity!

Most Diamond maneuvers are flown at 4 G's and in the speed range of 380-450 knots, although each type of maneuver have minimum safe airspeeds and altitudes (on top) to avoid an abort. The slowest you'll typically hear the Boss call any loop is 420 knots and most likely during some of the more demanding turnarounds and 5-ship formations. We as Virtual Thunderbirds (to counteract lag and proficiency) fly most of our pulls and speeds about 10-20% slower, since at that point the math works out for timing, pull, altitude and visually correct from show center. For instance, we fly our loops at 400 knots instead of 450 knots and just shy of 3 G's instead of 4 G's; however, given the variables the smoke trail ends up looking the same as in real life with roughly the same on top altitude as well.
