Actually, Tailhook, that was a cropduster...
They actually did cat launch propeller driven aircraft that were heavily laden with ordnance. I've got some pictures of Corsairs being cat launched during the Korean War.

Animated version of Top Gun and Behind Enemy Lines, should be interesting. Take note there are some similar scenes from both of those titles in that trailer.
