I need to buy a camera.

Which one is good for the average guy. I don't need the SLR models.

In the $300-400 range what brand name and model would be good?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry to jump the gun (I'm not Cinch) :!:  Canon PowerShot SD600, SD630 or SD700 IS. Ultra compact, 6MP with outstanding quality and features in a small package. I have a few websites that sell these models for $300 or less (unfortunately not with me). They retail for more than $400 usually. Try www.newegg.com and search for Point and Shoot Digital Cameras (brand: Canon). Then surf over to www.powershot.com for more info on Digital Cameras by Canon. I'll let Cinch take it from here... :!:

P.S. I just bought a SD600 for my sister and it's absolutely amazing (and small)! Makes my two-year old S500 Canon PowerShot look like it's from the stoneage; however, it still takes rockin' photos!

Canon S2 IS

I shoot pictures with the Canon S2 IS. 5.1 MegaPixels and also does video clips with stereo sound. Nice thing about the S2 IS is that even though it isnt an SLR...its the same form factor as a 35mm camera body, and there is an adapter you can get so that you can use addon lenses and filters. Its also in the less than 400 dollar range. You can take rapid fire photos with it as well...I believe about 3-4 per second. It can also be found on Newegg.com. Something worth mentioning though, if you take video clips with it I would get a 2 GB SD card. Videos eat up memory fast.

Redeye, are those canadian dollars? Seems expensive. Before I bought the SD600 last month, I checked a dozen online sites as well as Best Buy and Circuit City down the street. The in-store retail prices were in general 25-40% higher (in some cases more than $100 expensive) compared to ordering online and (at the time, maybe still?) if you order from www.newegg.com you get a free 1GB memory stick. Since then I read an ad in a video editing magazine that had all the PowerShot ultra lights mentioned above, ranging between $249-399 (USD). I don't have the magazine here, so I cannot give you the link, but I remember it well since it made me think twice about buying yet another camera considering the price. Otherwise, there's always the budget package Striker suggested... with sleek, plastic exterior, lightweight composites, attached artwork and a true... Point and Click!

Something in the meantime Redeye. Click here! The comparison from most online vendors is usually off more times than not with incorrectly listed features etc, so for those go to Canon's website, but check out the pricelistings!

Remember the FSSB mod, we paid $150-200 more than you guys in the states.

We're talking two different currencies which makes it hard to compare unless you convert one way or the other. Not quite sure I'm following why it would cost you more if you ordered online, even if the currency you pay in is USD? After you convert the price to CAD, wouldn't it still be a lot cheaper than running down to the local retail store? ...or are there other fees involved through customs that bring the price up substantially?

Ive been following this one and Im confused. Sorry to be ignorant but isnt LD correct? With exchange rates and everything wouldnt the price be the same as what we are paying here in the states? Or is the situation similar to the UK where taxes are so ridiculously high?

PS I have the S2 IS which is the model prior to the S3. I would think you could find a deal on an S2 since the S3 was just realeased recently. Its not waterproof though...lol

I had no idea Canada added on all those charges!? :o That's an insane amount considering how much cheaper these same cameras are online compared to in-store where you live. I would never have guessed it could be more expensive with a price that much lower to begin with...

That's tough...

Since we started this discussion, I've had a chance to play around with the SD600 some more and it's a great camera. Check out www.amazon.com for reviews. I couldn't agree more with most of them! Just search for the model name (i.e. "SD600" etc). I also toyed around with a SD630 in a store the other day and it too is really cool. The SD600 is the smallest and thinnest, the SD630 has a 3" LCD (compare to 2.5" for the others) that's very bright and looks awesome, while the main selling point of the SD700 is "IS" or image stabilization. Sort of a stabilizing gyro for shaky hands. Very useful for low light conditions; however, not good enough for sports photography since all these ultra lights lack the option to adjust shutter speed. Aside from those three main differences between these models, these three cameras are almost the same with most specs identical as far as size, quality, megapixels, LCD resolution, zoom etc. They weigh next to nothing and will fit in your front pocket. My personal favorite from having seen it the other day is the SD630. The slightly bigger LCD looks amazing and makes for high quality instant feedback of your pictures on the spot!

Hope this helps!

P.S. Promise I don't work for Canon...

Thanks for all your help LD.

Everything cost more up here! Sometimes almost twice as much? Take the Canon SD600 @ $230 US, up here its $399.94? My CH Pro rudder peddals were $220. Like i said, everything cost more!

I also went down to the store to handel some of these cameras and found i didn't like the small ones. They seem sensitive to movement and i fear might produce blurry pictures, even with image stabilization. I did like the SD630 for the larger LCD though.

I was looking at the larger Canon S2 IS @$499 canadian. The newer model S3 IS cost $599.
Start to add on: case, memory stick, batteries and charger etc and its getting expensive.

There is 3 stores near me, London Drugs, Future Shop and Staples. I will work the stores to see who will give the best deal once i figure out which camera i want?

Again, thanks for the help.
